Spring Bound | Cornwall Today March 2016

There’s hope in the air as we head towards March. The days are getting longer again, and whatever the weather throws at us – oh my, has it thrown some serious stuff at us this past two months – an extra hour or two of daylight brings with it an air of expectation and hope for spring.
I introduced the colours for 2016 in February – a fresh, uplifting palette. As box upon box of new stock arrives at the shop, we are building a picture of spring which is refreshing, calm, zingy, pretty and above all, uplifting. Key Pantone colours for this early, pre-spring period include Buttercup Yellow, Green Flash and Snorkel Blue. We’re
seeing palm prints, ruffles and fringing, creating a colonial look with a vintage feel; and prints which are nostalgic and slip into your wardrobe without looking out of place, so you can nonchalantly tell your partner, as you slip that perfect piece out from the magic corner in the back of the wardrobe: “Oh, this old thing, I’ve had it for ages!”
Sun-bleached pastels manifest themselves in marled knits and soft, feminine fabrics, teamed with washed denim in loose fits. Denim is such a fashion staple for these transitional months, the building block of our wardrobe and the foundation of a new season’s look. Think a slightly looser silhouette for 2016, which can be paired with a shorter top and long-line cardigan or jacket to give a casual yet considered look.
We love this Bellerose denim coat, so very versatile and stylish, perfect for the casual chic of Cornish life with a hint of city hipster thrown in – just to show the folk upcountry that we really do have our fingers on the pulse! Pair with simple fringed boots – Penelope Chilvers has come up trumps with the best pair I’ve ever seen, adding her signature detail of neon orange laces. These are perfect for now, and just as good in summer with bare, brown legs and shorts.
All this talk of colour and longer days seems a little premature when I look outside, but before we know it, it’ll be Easter and that could just as easily bring a heat wave or hail stones. I will be prepared for either with my denim coat and fringed boots, and either jeans or hot pants!
