Q&A with Rose Rankin
As an up-and-coming designer, Rose took some time out of her busy schedule for a quick Q&A giving us an insight into her design world, sharing the inspiration behind her latest collection...
WHAT DO YOU DO TO GET INSPIRED?
I take inspiration from the every day and create a scrapbook/mood board. It might be something I see someone wearing, a colour combination in interiors, architecture, something I see online, in a gallery, in a magazine. The mood board builds over time and then I think through it and this helps to become a base for the next collection.
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND YOUR FABULOUS NEW A/W16 COLLECTION?
My aim to create a deep rich Autumnal collection. I wanted the sneakers to feel opulent and luxurious but still fun. Inspiration for the prints came from different patterns I had seen over time, for example, the scale and microdot patterns that feature a lot came from a flower called the Snake's Head Fritillary which has an amazing tiny snake print in it and is a deep purple. I then combined these prints with dense coppers and brassy metallics that I have seen a lot of in interiors and which complement the darker palettes of winter.
WHAT DO YOU YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?
I love designing and fabric selection but that is a small part of the job in terms of time. I love learning - I am relatively new to this industry. I have a lot to learn but each time I do and it improves something about my business I feel satisfied. Lastly, I love to see shoes going out the door!
WHAT’S NEXT FOR ROSE RANKIN?
Continue to improve and grow our collections each season. Increase our range by introducing new styles. Look after our current customers and start to increase our customer base through exporting.
AND FINALLY, IF YOU COULD ONLY WEAR ONE PAIR OF SHOES FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, WHAT WOULD THEY BE?
Our Coney Low Tops. They are a comfortable classic sneaker but by just by playing with materials, you can turn them from something very clean and minimal into something loud and proud depending on how you feel!
