Monthly Discovery Blog - February

Each month we'll share with you some of our favourite discoveries; be it a new local hotspot, a book, a coastal footpath or a restaurant. We feel incredibly lucky to live in this beautiful corner of the world, and we want to share the love.
We'll start this month with a shop, a restaurant, a book and a playlist for you

Buck Becketts Fish Counter - Treloggan Estate, Newquay
Living by the sea one would presume that we have access to fresh fish straight from the boats, however until now this hasn't been easy to find in and around Newquay - but this has all changed! Team Buck Beckett has arrived with a fresh fish counter on Prow Park Business Village, and if you haven't visited them you MUST!
To be able to buy fish and shellfish straight from the sea, caught the same day is such a privilege and the quality and taste is unrivalled, as is the value for money!  Head to their Instagram page for daily updates, they're quick to reply to messages and a joy to deal with.

Counter Culture - Tapas bar and restaurant, Newquay
When someone tells me they've had the best Margarita in Newquay at this new bar I immediately had to go and try it for myself and was very excited by what I found!  Counter Culture opened it's doors in 2024 and hit the ground running; it describes itself as 'a cosy candle lit bar where you can come with friends to share some pintxos, tapas & small plates' and it delivers this in abundance! I felt like I'd been transported to the back streets of Barcelona, this place is so authentic from the delicious, imaginative food, the inexpensive Spanish wine available by the glass, carafe or bottle and the fabulous cocktails.
It's tiny and atmospheric and for 2025 is offering two dining options - you can book to eat in the small, informal restaurant or you can enjoy the new bar area which offers tapas and pintxos on a turn up basis.  It re-opens tomorrow and I'll be first in the queue to get a slice of Spain to lift me out of the winter doldrums. I predict a very busy year for this wonderful little gem.

Steak - The Whole Story by Tim Hayward
When this book arrived in store earlier this month we were completely blown away. It is such a considered piece of work, with incredible detail and insight into the production of steak; the historical, cultural and social significance of it and how we might continue to enjoy it sustainably, long into the future.
Though incredibly in depth, the book is completely accessible and is beautifully put together. A really thoughtful, and thought-provoking, manual that we think anyone who cares about steak would absolutely love to own!
